What do Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and Karl Lagerfeld all have in common? They each make a habit of reading every day.
If you want to sustain creative excellence make a habit of reading. Physical books or audiobooks, fiction or nonfiction, biographies or science fiction, business or art history, evolutionary biology or coding – it doesn’t matter, you must read. Just one chapter a night will keep you mentally sharp and expose you to new ideas. This will help you see trends and make connections from a wide range of topics so you can stay inspired and rapidly develop new project concepts.
Reading will also help you become a better communicator, perhaps the most valuable skill you can learn. As an creative professional, you are only as valuable as your ideas. If you cannot persuade your colleagues or clients to buy into your ideas, then they don’t matter very much, and neither will you.
