Most people don’t realize how many contacts they have. They talk to the same friends or colleagues but stop there. Have you considered former classmates, colleagues from earlier employers, relationships outside your current profession, etc?
View each conversations as a learning opportunity, not just a new job search. Ask about the industry, trends and patterns, how to position yourself and insights on how to succeed. Approaching these “meetings” as casual conversations help breaks the ice and keep things relaxed.
What you learn may change the way you present yourself or lead you to alter your employer targets. After each conversation, write down what you learned and what you’ll do as a result. If appropriate reconnect with people who shared their time and give them an update on what you learned and how you applied it to your situation.
Develop a system for yourself with keep good records. Don’t be the person applying for the same job at the same company you applied for two months ago.
